Halloween

How fun that Halloween fell on a school day this year! We had a ball dressing up, going on a costume parade, making toilet paper mummies, sorting candy for math, making monster boogers and vampire blood (gak) for science, and eating way too much candy!

Barnyard theme

For our literacy center we labeled plastic egg halves with lower and uppercase letters.  The students matched the letters to make an egg and then put each egg into an egg carton. 

For Science, we put eggs into different liquids such as water, kool aid, vinegar, and cola. We then watched the effect the different liquids had on each egg over the week.  Water had little effect after 3 days, where as the vinegar had nearly eaten away all of the hard shell and left a squishy goo-ball the kids loved to play with.  Our favorite were the kool aid eggs.  The sugar crystallized to make cool patterns we all enjoyed.  

We got practice milking cows by using milk filled rubber gloves that were pricked with a needle.  It took patience to fill our bucket, but we all had fun pretending they were real cows. 

I had each child cover their eyes as I selected a different animal hat and placed it on their head.  I then gave them several scientific facts about their animal until they could guess it correctly.

Colors

Who would have known that learning your colors could be this much fun?  We got really hands-on by experimenting with mixing colors.  We used shaving cream and paint to blend primary colors to make new colors.  We got messy, learned a ton, and had a blast!

The kids also enjoyed spraying water on their art work to watch it smear and blend. 

The highlight of our 'Color theme' week would have to be making colored milk bubbles.  We put the food coloring of each child's choice in cups of milk and had the kids blow colorful bubbles that overflowed to create a cool design.  The students were so cute laughing and giggling and loved trying to make their bubble tower the tallest.

For a fun gross motor activity we filled plastic jugs with colored water and had the children carry each bottle across the yard and place it on a sheet of matching colored paper.  We had fun racing each other.
